2021 Mazda’s the Top of Consumer Reports

February 19th, 2021 by

Mazda is alone at the top of the 2021 Consumer Reports’ report card for car brands that make the best vehicles, edging out BMW, Subaru, and Porsche.

This year’s top ranking is a first for Mazda but signifies the brand’s dedication to offering outstanding vehicles that are reliable and safe, while giving their owners what they need and expect.

Mazda moved up three spots from 2020, followed closely behind by BMW and Subaru for the top three positions. Porsche and Honda round out the top five.

Ranking Automotive Manufacturers

There’s more to the vehicle report card by Consumer Reports than simply ranking automotive manufacturers, though.

Each report card is compiled based on an overall score, taking into consideration road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

To be included in the report, each brand must have at least two vehicles tested.

  • Overall Score: For individual models, the overall score is based on four key factors — road test, reliability, safety, and owner satisfaction.
  • Road-Test Score: The vehicles purchased by Consumer Reports are put through more than 50 tests and evaluations to determine the road-test score.
  • Predicted Reliability: This rating is based on any problem(s) reported by members in the 17 trouble areas of the survey. These trouble areas include the engine, engine cooling, drive system, fuel system/emissions, electrical system, suspension/steering, and many others.
  • Owner Satisfaction: This prediction is made based on whether Consumer Report members indicate in their survey if, given the chance, they would buy this same vehicle again.
  • Safety: An assessment of crash-test results and additional points awarded for vehicles that come standard with proven safety features on all trims — as opposed to having these features on select trim levels.
  • Green Choices: This category reflects how many tested vehicles for each manufacturer earned the Green Choice designation for being among the cleanest, lowest-emitting passenger vehicles.

A testament to Mazda’s commitment to design, innovation, and safety, this achievement marks another proud moment for a brand that just celebrated its 100th anniversary.
