Mazda’s Green Innovations: Creating Sustainable Vehicles
Creating a sustainable future is embedded in the Mazda brand mission, from hybrid and electric technology to the design of its manufacturing plants.
Mazda’s “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 Vision” is a new way of thinking and growing in the 21st century that really highlights the brand’s dedication to green innovation and environmentalism.
The Mazda 2030 Vision is both a philosophy and a practice that drivers can see and feel every time they get behind the wheel of a Mazda vehicle.
The Mazda Sustainability Promise
Like its KODO design philosophy, which is at the root of the look and feel of all Mazda cars and SUVs, sustainability is more than the simple act of offering electric plug-ins and low-emissions packages — it’s a lifestyle.
The Mazda 2030 Vision includes an entire “well-to-wheel” approach to lower the environmental impact of Mazda vehicles at every point in their lifecycle.
In practice, this means that Mazda promises to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at every phase of its vehicle’s existence, from development to manufacturing to driving.
In fact, representatives from Mazda have made the following commitment to Earth: “By 2050, Mazda will achieve carbon neutrality during the entire lifecycle of its vehicles and the entire supply chain.”
This is a vast and demanding vision, one which Mazda is tackling from all ends.
Mazda’s Top Green Innovations
The most obvious source of Mazda’s reduction in CO2 emissions over the next few decades is the everyday performance of vehicles actively on the road. Employing top engineers as well as environmental experts has allowed Mazda to find innovative and cutting-edge ways to decrease each vehicle’s environmental footprint through technology. To date, this includes:
- All-New Electric Models: Between 2022 and 2025, Mazda plans to introduce 13 new electric and/or hybrid vehicles worldwide. It has also furthered its commitment to the electric future of automotive technology by promising that 100% of Mazda products will have some electric-based element, with 25% of those products being fully electric vehicle options.
- SkyActiv® Technology: Mazda continues to invest in its revolutionary SkyActiv® technology, which integrates fuel efficiency with power in a gasoline-based compression engine. This system is already reducing emissions among Mazda owners.
- Aerodynamic Design: KODO design focuses heavily upon the human connection and natural potential of vehicle details, which includes a hand-carved, aerodynamic profile for all Mazda vehicles. This reduces drag when driving a Mazda, which, in turn, lowers fuel emissions as vehicles become more efficient.
Mazda’s Sustainability Process
One of the key features of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 Vision is its impact on more than just the vehicle end of Mazda’s operations. Recall that their commitment is to be carbon neutral by 2050, which includes more than just emissions tests. In fact, the Mazda “road to zero” plan includes several features beyond its cars, trucks, and SUVs.
- Renewable Energy: Mazda outfitted its main manufacturing facility in Hiroshima, Japan, with a 1.1-megawatt solar panel system capable of powering the entire facility.
- Transportation: To further reduce overall CO2 emissions, Mazda has revamped its supply chain transportation system with a focus on efficiency. As a result, it has lowered CO2 emissions during this phase by 40% as compared to 1990 levels.
- Manufacturing: Mazda has also made environmentally focused choices in the manufacturing process, including a unique three-layer Aqua-tech paint system. The manufacturing and use of Aqua-tech produces 78% less CO2 than other oil-based vehicle paints.
The Heart of Mazda’s 2030 Vision
While other automobile manufacturers make performative gestures toward sustainability, Mazda is committed to living this practice from start to finish.
The manufacturer has summarized its vision for the future as one focused on “preserving the beauty of the earth while enriching individual lives and society as a whole, and commits Mazda to continue seeking ways to inspire people through the value found in cars.”
That’s what makes owning a Mazda so special. It’s about more than the driving experience, although that is pretty incredible as well.
